Chapter 7

Morning came too early. Although I’d slept about five hours the night before, it felt like I’d only been asleep for a couple of seconds. Scratching my, still, wart covered ass, I got up to start the day. The morning passed in its usual chaotic rush. Vivian and Henry were slow to get ready for school, and were a bit thrown off their schedule since they didn’t have school the day before. While the search for Aiden was still going strong, the county had decided to hold school on a normal schedule today.

Somehow, we made it to the drop off line at the school on time. I blew kisses into Henry and Vivian’s hands for love and luck as we waited our turn in line. When I made it back home, I had a text from Trisha saying she was nervous to send the kids to school today, but didn’t know what else to do. She was headed back out again today to help the town search for Aiden. I had decided it was probably best if I avoided any public appearances for a while. I didn’t want to risk any more opportunities for bad publicity.

Daisy and I had only been home for about two hours, and I was folding laundry while she was entertaining herself by making her stuffed turtle and a stuffed bear take turns floating through the air, when my cell phone rang.

“Hello,” I answered.

“Hi, Ms. Andrews? This is Tracy, the secretary at the school. Um, well, I’m calling to let you know that Vivian is in the office. There was an incident today during her gym class, and, um, she is being sent home. You need to come get her right away,” Tracy, the school’s secretary informed me.

“What? Is everything ok?” I asked.

“Oh, well, yes. I mean, Vivian is fine. She just got into an altercation with another child, and we need you to come get her because she is being suspended,” Tracy sounded like she was anticipating me freaking out and yelling at her. My guess was that she had been screamed at by quite a few entitled parents.

“Ok, I’m on my way,” I said, and disconnected the call. Vivian was not a troublemaker. She was usually my kid I could depend on to help get the other two in line. I couldn’t even begin to imagine what she could have possibly done to warrant a suspension. I scooped Daisy up and we headed to the school.

Waiting to speak to the Principal still made me as nervous as it used to when I was in school myself. And after my first meeting with Ms. Sunders, I didn’t have high hopes for her opinion of me. Daisy was strapped to my chest in the Ergo, and we were waiting in the discarded desk chairs that sat in the front of the school’s office.

“Maggie,” Tracy’s voice was barely a whisper, as she called to me from the secretary’s desk, “I was wondering if you could help me with something.
